kernel security update
Details

The Linux Kernel, the operating system core itself.

Security Fix(es):

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

drm/vmwgfx: Return the correct value in vmw_translate_ptr functions

Before the referenced fixes these functions used a lookup function that returned a pointer. This was changed to another lookup function that returned an error code with the pointer becoming an out parameter.

The error path when the lookup failed was not changed to reflect this change and the code continued to return the PTR_ERR of the now uninitialized pointer. This could cause the vmw_translate_ptr functions to return success when they actually failed causing further uninitialized and OOB accesses.(CVE-2026-23317)

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

NFSD: Defer sub-object cleanup in export put callbacks

svc_export_put() calls path_put() and auth_domain_put() immediately when the last reference drops, before the RCU grace period. RCU readers in e_show() and c_show() access both ex_path (via seq_path/d_path) and ex_client->name (via seq_escape) without holding a reference. If cache_clean removes the entry and drops the last reference concurrently, the sub-objects are freed while still in use, producing a NULL pointer dereference in d_path.

Commit 2530766492ec ("nfsd: fix UAF when access ex_uuid or ex_stats") moved kfree of ex_uuid and ex_stats into the call_rcu callback, but left path_put() and auth_domain_put() running before the grace period because both may sleep and call_rcu callbacks execute in softirq context.

Replace call_rcu/kfree_rcu with queue_rcu_work(), which defers the callback until after the RCU grace period and executes it in process context where sleeping is permitted. This allows path_put() and auth_domain_put() to be moved into the deferred callback alongside the other resource releases. Apply the same fix to expkey_put(), which has the identical pattern with ek_path and ek_client.

A dedicated workqueue scopes the shutdown drain to only NFSD export release work items; flushing the shared system_unbound_wq would stall on unrelated work from other subsystems. nfsd_export_shutdown() uses rcu_barrier() followed by flush_workqueue() to ensure all deferred release callbacks complete before the export caches are destroyed.

Reviwed-by: Jeff Layton <(CVE-2026-31404)

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

net: bonding: fix use-after-free in bond_xmit_broadcast()

bond_xmit_broadcast() reuses the original skb for the last slave (determined by bond_is_last_slave()) and clones it for others. Concurrent slave enslave/release can mutate the slave list during RCU-protected iteration, changing which slave is "last" mid-loop. This causes the original skb to be double-consumed (double-freed).

Replace the racy bond_is_last_slave() check with a simple index comparison (i + 1 == slaves_count) against the pre-snapshot slave count taken via READ_ONCE() before the loop. This preserves the zero-copy optimization for the last slave while making the "last" determination stable against concurrent list mutations.

The UAF can trigger the following crash:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

dmaengine: idxd: Fix memory leak when a wq is reset

idxd_wq_disable_cleanup() which is called from the reset path for a workqueue, sets the wq type to NONE, which for other parts of the driver mean that the wq is empty (all its resources were released).

Only set the wq type to NONE after its resources are released.(CVE-2026-31441)

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

ext4: avoid infinite loops caused by residual data

On the mkdir/mknod path, when mapping logical blocks to physical blocks, if inserting a new extent into the extent tree fails (in this example, because the file system disabled the huge file feature when marking the inode as dirty), ext4_ext_map_blocks() only calls ext4_free_blocks() to reclaim the physical block without deleting the corresponding data in the extent tree. This causes subsequent mkdir operations to reference the previously reclaimed physical block number again, even though this physical block is already being used by the xattr block. Therefore, a situation arises where both the directory and xattr are using the same buffer head block in memory simultaneously.

The above causes ext4_xattr_block_set() to enter an infinite loop about "inserted" and cannot release the inode lock, ultimately leading to the 143s blocking problem mentioned in [1].

If the metadata is corrupted, then trying to remove some extent space can do even more harm. Also in case EXT4_GET_BLOCKS_DELALLOC_RESERVE was passed, remove space wrongly update quota information. Jan Kara suggests distinguishing between two cases:

 1. The error is ENOSPC or EDQUOT - in this case the filesystem is fully consistent and we must maintain its consistency including all the accounting. However these errors can happen only early before we've inserted the extent into the extent tree. So current code works correctly for this case.

 2. Some other error - this means metadata is corrupted. We should strive to do as few modifications as possible to limit damage. So I'd just skip freeing of allocated blocks.

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

ksmbd: do not expire session on binding failure

When a multichannel session binding request fails (e.g. wrong password), the error path unconditionally sets sess->state = SMB2_SESSION_EXPIRED. However, during binding, sess points to the target session looked up via ksmbd_session_lookup_slowpath() -- which belongs to another connection's user. This allows a remote attacker to invalidate any active session by simply sending a binding request with a wrong password (DoS).

Fix this by skipping session expiration when the failed request was a binding attempt, since the session does not belong to the current connection. The reference taken by ksmbd_session_lookup_slowpath() is still correctly released via ksmbd_user_session_put().(CVE-2026-31476)

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

net: fix fanout UAF in packet_release() via NETDEV_UP race

packet_release() has a race window where NETDEV_UP can re-register a socket into a fanout group's arr[] array. The re-registration is not cleaned up by fanout_release(), leaving a dangling pointer in the fanout array. packet_release() does NOT zero po->num in its bind_lock section. After releasing bind_lock, po->num is still non-zero and po->ifindex still matches the bound device. A concurrent packet_notifier(NETDEV_UP) that already found the socket in sklist can re-register the hook. For fanout sockets, this re-registration calls __fanout_link(sk, po) which adds the socket back into f->arr[] and increments f->num_members, but does NOT increment f->sk_ref.

The fix sets po->num to zero in packet_release while bind_lock is held to prevent NETDEV_UP from linking, preventing the race window.

This bug was found following an additional audit with Claude Code based on CVE-2025-38617.(CVE-2026-31504)

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

af_key: validate families in pfkey_send_migrate()

syzbot was able to trigger a crash in skb_put() [1]

Issue is that pfkey_send_migrate() does not check old/new families, and that set_ipsecrequest() @family argument was truncated, thus possibly overfilling the skb.

Validate families early, do not wait set_ipsecrequest().

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

module: Fix kernel panic when a symbol st_shndx is out of bounds

The module loader doesn't check for bounds of the ELF section index in simplify_symbols():

 for (i = 1; i < symsec->sh_size / sizeof(Elf_Sym); i++) {
	const char *name = info->strtab + sym[i].st_name;

	switch (sym[i].st_shndx) {
	case SHN_COMMON:

	[...]

	default:
 /* Divert to percpu allocation if a percpu var. */
 if (sym[i].st_shndx == info->index.pcpu)
 secbase = (unsigned long)mod_percpu(mod);
 else

/** HERE --> **/ secbase = info->sechdrs[sym[i].st_shndx].sh_addr; sym[i].st_value += secbase; break; } }

A symbol with an out-of-bounds st_shndx value, for example 0xffff (known as SHN_XINDEX or SHN_HIRESERVE), may cause a kernel panic:

BUG: unable to handle page fault for address: ... RIP: 0010:simplify_symbols+0x2b2/0x480 ... Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception

This can happen when module ELF is legitimately using SHN_XINDEX or when it is corrupted.

Add a bounds check in simplify_symbols() to validate that st_shndx is within the valid range before using it.

This issue was discovered due to a bug in llvm-objcopy, see relevant discussion for details [1].

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

nvme-pci: ensure we're polling a polled queue

A user can change the polled queue count at run time. There's a brief window during a reset where a hipri task may try to poll that queue before the block layer has updated the queue maps, which would race with the now interrupt driven queue and may cause double completions.(CVE-2026-31523)

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

futex: Clear stale exiting pointer in futex_lock_pi() retry path

Fuzzying/stressing futexes triggered:

WARNING: kernel/futex/core.c:825 at wait_for_owner_exiting+0x7a/0x80, CPU#11: futex_lock_pi_s/524

When futex_lock_pi_atomic() sees the owner is exiting, it returns -EBUSY and stores a refcounted task pointer in 'exiting'.

After wait_for_owner_exiting() consumes that reference, the local pointer is never reset to nil. Upon a retry, if futex_lock_pi_atomic() returns a different error, the bogus pointer is passed to wait_for_owner_exiting().

CPU0 CPU1 CPU2 futex_lock_pi(uaddr) // acquires the PI futex exit() futex_cleanup_begin() futex_state = EXITING; futex_lock_pi(uaddr) futex_lock_pi_atomic() attach_to_pi_owner() // observes EXITING *exiting = owner; // takes ref return -EBUSY wait_for_owner_exiting(-EBUSY, owner) put_task_struct(); // drops ref // exiting still points to owner goto retry; futex_lock_pi_atomic() lock_pi_update_atomic() cmpxchg(uaddr) *uaddr ^= WAITERS // whatever // value changed return -EAGAIN; wait_for_owner_exiting(-EAGAIN, exiting) // stale WARN_ON_ONCE(exiting)

Fix this by resetting upon retry, essentially aligning it with requeue_pi.(CVE-2026-31555)

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

spi: spi-dw-dma: fix print error log when wait finish transaction

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

KVM: SEV: Protect all of sev_mem_enc_register_region() with kvm->lock

Take and hold kvm->lock for before checking sev_guest() in sev_mem_enc_register_region(), as sev_guest() isn't stable unless kvm->lock is held (or KVM can guarantee KVM_SEV_INIT{2} has completed and can't rollack state). In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

rxrpc: proc: size address buffers for %pISpc output

The AF_RXRPC procfs helpers format local and remote socket addresses into fixed 50-byte stack buffers with "%pISpc".

That is too small for the longest current-tree IPv6-with-port form the formatter can produce. In lib/vsprintf.c, the compressed IPv6 path uses a dotted-quad tail not only for v4mapped addresses, but also for ISATAP addresses via ipv6_addr_is_isatap().

As a result, a case such as

is possible with the current formatter. That is 50 visible characters, so 51 bytes including the trailing NUL, which does not fit in the existing char[50] buffers used by net/rxrpc/proc.c.

Size the buffers from the formatter's maximum textual form and switch the call sites to scnprintf().

Changes since v1:

 • correct the changelog to cite the actual maximum current-tree case explicitly
 • frame the proof around the ISATAP formatting path instead of the earlier mapped-v4 example(CVE-2026-31630)

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

Input: uinput - fix circular locking dependency with ff-core

A lockdep circular locking dependency warning can be triggered reproducibly when using a force-feedback gamepad with uinput (for example, playing ELDEN RING under Wine with a Flydigi Vader 5 controller):

ff->mutex -> udev->mutex -> input_mutex -> dev->mutex -> ff->mutex

The cycle is caused by four lock acquisition paths:

 1. ff upload: input_ff_upload() holds ff->mutex and calls uinput_dev_upload_effect() -> uinput_request_submit() -> uinput_request_send(), which acquires udev->mutex.

 2. device create: uinput_ioctl_handler() holds udev->mutex and calls uinput_create_device() -> input_register_device(), which acquires input_mutex.

 3. device register: input_register_device() holds input_mutex and calls kbd_connect() -> input_register_handle(), which acquires dev->mutex.

 4. evdev release: evdev_release() calls input_flush_device() under dev->mutex, which calls input_ff_flush() acquiring ff->mutex.

Fix this by introducing a new state_lock spinlock to protect udev->state and udev->dev access in uinput_request_send() instead of acquiring udev->mutex. The function only needs to atomically check device state and queue an input event into the ring buffer via uinput_dev_event() -- both operations are safe under a spinlock (ktime_get_ts64() and wake_up_interruptible() do not sleep). This breaks the ff->mutex -> udev->mutex link since a spinlock is a leaf in the lock ordering and cannot form cycles with mutexes.

To keep state transitions visible to uinput_request_send(), protect writes to udev->state in uinput_create_device() and uinput_destroy_device() with the same state_lock spinlock.

Additionally, move init_completion(&request->done) from uinput_request_send() to uinput_request_submit() before uinput_request_reserve_slot(). Once the slot is allocated, uinput_flush_requests() may call complete() on it at any time from the destroy path, so the completion must be initialised before the request becomes visible.

Lock ordering after the fix:

ff->mutex -> state_lock (spinlock, leaf) udev->mutex -> state_lock (spinlock, leaf) udev->mutex -> input_mutex -> dev->mutex -> ff->mutex (no back-edge)(CVE-2026-31667)

openvswitch: validate MPLS set/set_masked payload length

validate_set() accepted OVS_KEY_ATTR_MPLS as variable-sized payload for SET/SET_MASKED actions. In action handling, OVS expects fixed-size MPLS key data (struct ovs_key_mpls).

Use the already normalized key_len (masked case included) and reject non-matching MPLS action key sizes.

Reject invalid MPLS action payload lengths early.(CVE-2026-31679)

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

bridge: br_nd_send: linearize skb before parsing ND options

br_nd_send() parses neighbour discovery options from ns->opt[] and assumes that these options are in the linear part of request.

Its callers only guarantee that the ICMPv6 header and target address are available, so the option area can still be non-linear. Parsing ns->opt[] in that case can access data past the linear buffer.

Linearize request before option parsing and derive ns from the linear network header.(CVE-2026-31682)

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

crypto: ccp: Don't attempt to copy ID to userspace if PSP command failed

When retrieving the ID for the CPU, don't attempt to copy the ID blob to userspace if the firmware command failed. If the failure was due to an invalid length, i.e. the userspace buffer+length was too small, copying the number of bytes firmware requires will overflow the kernel-allocated buffer and leak data to userspace.

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

Bluetooth: SMP: derive legacy responder STK authentication from MITM state

The legacy responder path in smp_random() currently labels the stored STK as authenticated whenever pending_sec_level is BT_SECURITY_HIGH. That reflects what the local service requested, not what the pairing flow actually achieved.

For Just Works/Confirm legacy pairing, SMP_FLAG_MITM_AUTH stays clear and the resulting STK should remain unauthenticated even if the local side requested HIGH security. Use the established MITM state when storing the responder STK so the key metadata matches the pairing result.

This also keeps the legacy path aligned with the Secure Connections code, which already treats JUST_WORKS/JUST_CFM as unauthenticated.(CVE-2026-31773)

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

xen/privcmd: fix double free via VMA splitting

privcmd_vm_ops defines .close (privcmd_close), but neither .may_split nor .open. When userspace does a partial munmap() on a privcmd mapping, the kernel splits the VMA via __split_vma(). Since may_split is NULL, the split is allowed. vm_area_dup() copies vm_private_data (a pages array allocated in alloc_empty_pages()) into the new VMA without any fixup, because there is no .open callback.

Both VMAs now point to the same pages array. When the unmapped portion is closed, privcmd_close() calls: - xen_unmap_domain_gfn_range() - xen_free_unpopulated_pages() - kvfree(pages)

The surviving VMA still holds the dangling pointer. When it is later destroyed, the same sequence runs again, which leads to a double free.

Fix this issue by adding a .may_split callback denying the VMA split.

This is XSA-487 / CVE-2026-31787(CVE-2026-31787)

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

Bluetooth: MGMT: validate LTK enc_size on load

Load Long Term Keys stores the user-provided enc_size and later uses it to size fixed-size stack operations when replying to LE LTK requests. An enc_size larger than the 16-byte key buffer can therefore overflow the reply stack buffer.

Reject oversized enc_size values while validating the management LTK record so invalid keys never reach the stored key state.(CVE-2026-43020)

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

HID: logitech-hidpp: Prevent use-after-free on force feedback initialisation failure

Presently, if the force feedback initialisation fails when probing the Logitech G920 Driving Force Racing Wheel for Xbox One, an error number will be returned and propagated before the userspace infrastructure (sysfs and /dev/input) has been torn down. If userspace ignores the errors and continues to use its references to these dangling entities, a UAF will promptly follow.

We have 2 options; continue to return the error, but ensure that all of the infrastructure is torn down accordingly or continue to treat this condition as a warning by emitting the message but returning success. It is thought that the original author's intention was to emit the warning but keep the device functional, less the force feedback feature, so let's go with that.(CVE-2026-43049)

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

dmaengine: idxd: Fix not releasing workqueue on .release()

The workqueue associated with an DSA/IAA device is not released when the object is freed.(CVE-2026-43064)

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

perf/x86/intel/uncore: Skip discovery table for offline dies

This warning can be triggered if NUMA is disabled and the system boots with fewer CPUs than the number of CPUs in die 0.

WARNING: CPU: 9 PID: 7257 at uncore.c:1157 uncore_pci_pmu_register+0x136/0x160 [intel_uncore]

Currently, the discovery table continues to be parsed even if all CPUs in the associated die are offline. This can lead to an array overflow at "pmu->boxes[die] = box" in uncore_pci_pmu_register(), which may trigger the warning above or cause other issues.(CVE-2026-43079)

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

pstore: ram_core: fix incorrect success return when vmap() fails

In persistent_ram_vmap(), vmap() may return NULL on failure.

If offset is non-zero, adding offset_in_page(start) causes the function to return a non-NULL pointer even though the mapping failed. persistent_ram_buffer_map() therefore incorrectly returns success.

Subsequent access to prz->buffer may dereference an invalid address and cause crashes.

Add proper NULL checking for vmap() failures.(CVE-2026-43124)

In the Linux kernel xfrm/ESP (IPsec) subsystem, when appending pipe pages to network packets (skb) via zero-copy mechanisms such as splice() / MSG_SPLICE_PAGES, IPv4/IPv6 datagram paths are not correctly marked with the SKBFL_SHARED_FRAG flag. The ESP receive path incorrectly treats these externally owned shared pages as private data, skipping the COW (copy-on-write) step and performing in-place decryption directly, allowing an attacker to pollute otherwise read-only pages in the page cache. Combined with CVE-2026-43500, a complete exploit chain can be formed, allowing local unprivileged users to obtain root privileges. This vulnerability affects almost all Linux distributions since 2017 (kernel ~ 4.10), including Ubuntu, RHEL, AlmaLinux, Debian, Fedora, etc. A public PoC has been released and signs of active exploitation have been observed.(CVE-2026-43284)
